Part B Excess Charges

What Does Medicare Part A Cover?

  • Inpatient hospital stay
  • Skilled nursing facility confinement (rehab)
  • Hospice and some home health care
  • Doctors who accept Medicare assignment have agreed to accept the approved Medicare amount for services.  That means doctors cannot charge you more than what Medicare pays for the service.  Doctors who don't accept assignment can charge more than what Medicare will pay for services and if they do this referred to as excess charges.  The limit on excess charges is 15% above the Medicare approved amount. Medicare punishes doctors who do not want to accept what Medicare agrees to pay for the service.  First, Medicare will only pay doctors at the rate of 95% when they want to charge more than the Medicare approved amount.  Second, when Medicare approves the claim the check is paid to the patient not the doctor, and the doctor is responsible for collecting the entire amount from the patient.
  • It is highly unlikely that your doctor would charge more than what Medicare allows.  96% of doctors accept Medicare assignment which means they only charge what Medicare has agreed to pay.  Plan F and Plan G are the only two Medigap plans that cover excess charges and I would not base your decision to enroll in either one of these plans just because they cover excess charges.

What Are The Part A and Part B Deductibles?
